Not only has Smokestack been running for over a decade - we’ve got some of Leeds' best soul, funk & jazz DJs behind our decks, who now have not only laid the musical foundations to Smokestack, but also have become part of the family.
Let’s start off with some introductions to who brings you 100% uncut funk, soul & everything in-between.
Mr Paul Dunphy goes by the alias The Gentleman DJ for his insistence on being sharply dressed at all times. He joined the Smokestack family in 2008 and since then has been a regular fixture.
Aside from DJing in Smokestack - a place he calls "the finest and funkiest joint in the world," Paul has filled dancefloors in bars, clubs and festivals around Leeds, and around the globe. His love of a diverse range of music means a set from Paul usually encompasses jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, jump blues, reggae and latin. Aside from being The Gentleman DJ, he's also an actor, comedian and radio presenter - hosting a show every Saturday on BBC Radio Leeds.
Marko Afro has been DJing around Leeds for the past 15 years as a vinyl only DJ. Specialising in all kinds of soul, psych, breaks & soundtracks. He has held residencies in some of Leeds’ biggest venues, & regularly plays at Outlaws Yacht Club, Doghouse, The Wardrobe and, of course, Smokestack.
You may also have caught him guesting for ‘Move on Up’ at the HiFi Club, which, has been running weekly for over 20 years.
As one half of the ‘7” Disco’ with Tony Green, he hosts a regular radio show on Leeds’s very own KMAH Radio & can also be found serving records at Leeds’ best & longest surviving independent record shop Jumbo Records.
Adrian Playle has been a resident at Smokestack since it opened its doors. Having also been a regular DJ at a whole host of Leeds bars over the last 20 years, his love of music is not restricted by genre or style. Funk, soul, R&B jump blues, Latin, afro, jazz, northern, disco, hip-hop and everything before, between and after can be heard in his sets. He currently plays Harlem Shuffle Fridays every month at Smokestack.
So, next time you're down on Lower Briggate, sipping some New Orleans-inspired cocktails at Smokestack and enjoying those sweet, sweet tunes say hello to our residents!
